## EV charging station or an ordinary plug? The latter is not a safe solution.

When you buy an electric car, it comes with a cable with one end that fits the car's charging port and the other an ordinary household socket. However, these ordinary household sockets are not designed to withstand long-term loading at high current.

Besides being unsuitable, the socket may be worn or faulty, and if you use it to charge an electric car, the worst-case consequence can be a fire. There is also a risk that, in the event of damage, the insurance company will not directly compensate for damage caused by charging from a socket.

## EV charging speed – how the power of a charging point affects charging speed

The power of EV charging stations is given in kilowatts (kW), and it determines how quickly the car can charge its battery.

It is important to note, however, that a car's charging speed depends on both the power of the charging station and the car's on-board charger. Charging speed can also vary with the battery's state of charge. Most electric cars charge faster when the battery is emptier and slow down as the battery starts to fill up. This is because battery management systems aim to protect the batteries from overloading and extend their service life.

For home use, the most common EV charging station outputs are 11 kW and 22 kW. In addition, 3.7 kW charging stations are used, as well as an ordinary socket that has been verified as safe, whose charging power must always be limited to 8 A.

For an indicative estimate of charging time, divide the capacity of the electric car's battery by the available charging power.

### EV charging station 11 kW

[11 kW charging stations](https://wirmax.fi/artikkelit/11kw-sahkoauton-latausasema-kotiin) are the most common home charging stations, because most electric cars support 11 kW charging power. This is also the maximum power that the normal capacity of a home's electricity supply is usually sufficient for. An 11 kW charging station can fully charge a typical electric car in 4–6 hours, depending on the size of the car's battery.

### EV charging station 22 kW

[22 kW charging stations](https://wirmax.fi/artikkelit/22kw-sahkoauton-latausasema-kotiin) are faster than 11 kW charging stations and can typically charge a car in 2–3 hours. It is important to note, however, that not all electric cars can make full use of a 22 kW station's power, because their on-board charger may limit the charging speed. The capacity of the home's electricity supply must also be checked.

3. **Choose a suitable service package** – On the page, choose a more specific work package from the options available (if offered) and click the buy and book a time button for the package you want.
4. **Choosing the installation time** – Choose an installation date and time that suits you. Then click add to order.
5. **Send the order** – Fill in your order details and send the order – you don't pay yet at this stage. We invoice the order on delivery. If the order includes installation, our installer will contact you in good time to confirm the exact time.

### How long does it take to install an EV charging station?

How long a charging station installation takes depends on the site. At detached houses, installation takes from a few hours to one day, and at housing company and commercial properties 1–4 weeks.

### What is a Type 2 charging cable?

Type 2 is a widely used standard for electric car charging connectors in Europe. It is also known as the Mennekes connector. Type 2 charging cables are used by many electric car manufacturers, including Tesla (in Europe), BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Volkswagen. ### What is a Type 1 charging cable?

The Type 1 connector was used in the first electric cars and can still be found in some car models. It is designed for a maximum charging power of about 7.4 kW, so its charging speed is slow. With a Type 2 connector, cars can be charged at up to 22 kW. A Type 1 cable is compatible with Type 2 charging stations using an adapter. ### Why choose an 11 kW charging station?
